The Story of 882

A century of work,
welcome, and reinvention.

If you ever walked past the glass block windows at 882 Broadway and wondered what stories were hidden inside, the answer reaches back more than a century. This building has been in the same family for over four generations, carrying a legacy of hard work, entrepreneurship, hospitality, and community. It is a space where people have worked with their hands, built livelihoods, welcomed neighbors, and carried forward a version of the American dream.

One hundred years ago, 882 Broadway was a hub for numerous family businesses — craftsmen, tradesmen, and entrepreneurs building livelihoods while serving the needs of the neighborhood around them. From that foundation of work and ambition, one small ice cream parlor would become something much larger. Expertise in early refrigeration systems transformed the space into one of the area's earliest air-conditioned event spaces at a time when few existed. Built-in refrigeration and new methods for preserving and serving food allowed the business to grow into a thriving catering and hospitality operation. Weddings, dances, celebrations, and community events filled the halls for decades, creating memories woven into the lives of countless local families.

More recently, 882 Broadway is remembered by many as the home of On Broadway — a smoke-free, alcohol-free dance club and event space where people gathered to dance, meet, and celebrate in a setting that welcomed everyone without pretense. On Broadway created something rare: a lively social space that felt open, comfortable, and genuinely safe. It became especially meaningful for minority communities, members of the deafblind and disabled communities, and others who often had trouble finding a place for nightlife that felt welcoming instead of rowdy or exclusive.

For the past three decades, the building has remained in private use and largely been absent from public life. But 882 Broadway has never stood still for long. In every generation, these doors have found new ways to adapt, innovate, and serve the community around it. Now, after more than a century of entrepreneurship, hospitality, and reinvention, the building is preparing to open its doors once again. What does this corner of Somerville need now?
